26426 Antique Tabriz Persian Rugs

These hand knotted rugs woven in the city of Tabriz, northwest Persia. These traditional styled carpets made, using a wool pile or wool and silk, on cotton foundation. The finest Tabriz rugs with knot counts of over 800 knots per square inch are woven on a silk foundation. The Tabriz Persian rugs usually have a very detailed pattern with a color palette of over 30 plus different colors, including floral and animal elements often arranged around one or more of the center medallion and executed in rich subtle hues. Some examples display poetic quotes or other Farsi (Persian) inscriptions executed in Arabic calligraphy placed in cartouches and borders. Many Garden Pieces “Four Season” depict the Islamic concept of paradise- luxuriant floral, birds and animals. Antique silk Tabriz rugs often feature pictorial or panel designs of small squares with floral motifs. Hadji Jalli, from the town of Marand, achieved recognition as the most famous Tabriz rug.
